Complete Fuel Cell Manufacturing Process

Delta ModTech and Fuel Cell Manufacturing

When it comes to coating and converting delicate substrates or thin films like those used in the fuel cell production, the options are endless. From fully automating the coating and drying process, to laser etching an electrode, to advanced stacking and assembly. The modular design of our machines allows the process to be as simple or complex as you need:

  • Coat in single or multiple layers
  • Laser cut
  • Die cutting
  • Heating lamination
  • Stacking
  • Roll to roll or discrete part production

Reduce your risk, take your raw materials to full production fuel cells with Delta ModTech.

Electrode Coating and Converting Demo

Above we’re demonstrating our capabilities specific to the fuel cell industry by using advanced coating and converting techniques. We take raw catalyst ink all the way through production to create a roll of converted electrodes. The first machine is the DynaCoat®, a state-of-the-art, small footprint, compact coater and dryer. Using a skip coating process, and proprietary drying process we are producing anode/cathode patches of catalyst ink on an aluminum foil substrate. Next, the roll of electrodes are laser etched using Delta’s Crusader® Converter with IR EDGE® Laser Technology and rewound.

Fuel Cell Manufacturing

There are several different kinds of fuel cells, Proton Exchange Membranes (PEM), Alkaline Fuel cells, and several others . While the materials used to make the fuel cells are different, they all have similar components, an anode a cathode and a separator. There are many different methods for assembling these fuel cells, but they all have these components.

Films wound together

The anode is the negative electrode that gives off electrons and the cathode is the positive electrode that collects the electrons.

As the electrons are exchanged between the anode and cathode, they create these positive and negative charges which is what creates electricity. With all of this, every anode and cathode needs to be coated with a “slurry” of chemicals. This is the part that can make or break a battery. Read more about electrodes here.

Funding Options

Because of this, the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) has invested millions into the energy industry. Offering grants to companies for research of battery or fuel cell technology or production and recycling of batteries. On May 22nd, 2023 the DOE announced almost $60 million in grants across 22 projects for hydrogen production, storage, and technologies. There are several options from the DOE for funding and grants in the battery and hydrogen fuel cell industry:
